Barcelos Rooster by Prazeres Côta 12''- Red is backordered and will ship as soon as it is back in stock.
The Galo de Barcelos (Barcelos Rooster) became a national symbol of Portugal thanks to João Domingos Côta da Rocha.
Prazeres, his granddaughter, continues the family tradition by offering her own interpretation of the Galo de Barcelos—bold, personal, yet always true to its roots: vivid colors and a deliberately exaggerated comb.
The works of Prazeres Côta, and those of her mother Júlia, consistently reflect rural life in the Minho region, its traditional icons, and influences drawn from religious or mythological beliefs.
Why I love it
- A one-of-a-kind creation that blurs the line between folk craft and naïve art.
- A personal and modern interpretation of the Barcelos Rooster.
- The authentic and unique character of every single figurine.

More informations?
The Côta family is widely considered the most emblematic and charismatic representative of figurative folk art in Barcelos and the Minho region of northern Portugal.
Today, Prazeres—one of Júlia Côta’s daughters—carries on the legacy with passion, following in the footsteps of her great-grandfather João Domingos Côta da Rocha, creator of the legendary Galo de Barcelos, now a true national symbol.
Discovered by the public during the 2018 Feira de Barcelos, where she was awarded “Artisan Revelation of the Year,” Prazeres is now a rising figure in Portuguese folk art. The Pottery Museum honors her with the exhibition "Geração Côta", featuring pieces from her own collection and from private collectors.
