The Viana beads are traditional jewelry from the Minho region in northern Portugal and are a symbol of luck in love.

The first bead was usually given by the godmother to her goddaughter at birth. It was threaded on a cotton bracelet or necklace. Over time, young girls received other beads that joined the first one. Then, on their wedding day, they wore their Viana bead necklace or bracelet as a symbol of happiness and luck.
