Tomato, lemon or just olive oil: here are 3 tins to discover the fantastic Portuguese sardine preserves from the Tricana brand. These famous sardine tins are traditionally sold in the small grocery store near the "Praça do Comércio" in Lisbon.

The quality of these preserves lies in the use of real, authentic Atlantic sardines, known as "Pilchardus" sardines. This quality is also attributed to the traditional Portuguese preparation method, where the sardines are selected and prepared by hand, one by one, pre-cooked, and then canned in their own sauce.

Why I love it

  • The freshness of the sardines is perceptible as soon as you open the can.
  • The texture of the sardines, both fleshy and melt-in-the-mouth.
  • The design of the packaging, deliciously retro and Portuguese.
  • Ideal for an aperitif with friends.

Content

  • 1 tin of sardines in olive oil.
  • 1 tin of sardines in olive oil and lemon.
  • 1 tin of sardines with olive oil and tomato.

Consumer tips

There's no such thing as vintage sardines, or at least they can't be sold, as all preserves have a use-by date after which they must be withdrawn from sale. However, sardines in olive oil can be stored for several years, as they improve with age. You can store them for yourself and eat them later. In this case, tins should be stored in a dry, dark place and turned regularly.

More informations ?

Tricana preserves are probably the most famous outside Portugal, and everyone knows the little century-old grocery store hidden behind Lisbon's Place du Commerce. The reputation of these preserves stems from their refusal of mass production and their respect for traditional manufacturing methods.
